The hybrid approach: DALI-2 drivers with Casambi CBU-ASD

On many real projects, the answer is not one or the other but a combination of both. The most common formula is to use high-quality DALI-2 certified drivers for the luminaires, combined with a Casambi CBU-ASD module as the bridge.

The CBU-ASD (Casambi Bluetooth Unit, Analog/DALI Slave) mounts in the electrical panel, connects to the drivers via the DALI-2 bus, and presents them as standard nodes on a Casambi BLE Mesh network. The result is that the fixtures appear in the Casambi app like any other node: dimmable, groupable, scene-capable and compatible with Casambi sensors.

This approach lets projects take advantage of the wide DALI-2 driver ecosystem (multiple manufacturers, broad price range) while keeping the flexible commissioning and operational experience that Casambi provides.   • Hospitals and healthcare facilities: choose DALI-2. Emergency lighting compliance to IEC 62386 Part 202 is mandatory, and wired reliability is required for life-safety systems.

  • New-build offices: DALI-2 or hybrid. If deep BMS integration is required, go with DALI-2. If the priority is simplified commissioning and day-to-day operation, the DALI-2 driver plus CBU-ASD hybrid is the practical choice.

  • Office retrofit: choose Casambi. No ceiling disruption for additional cabling, fast commissioning, easy reconfiguration when tenants change.

  • Hotels and resorts: hybrid is the most common choice. Guest rooms work well with Casambi; public areas with emergency lighting requirements use DALI-2 drivers with CBU-ASD.

  • Showrooms and retail: choose Casambi. Seasonal layout changes, rapid scene adjustment without involving a commissioning engineer, and no fixed cable topology to work around.
