Metal luminaire housings, deeply recessed downlights, and industrial environments with large steel structures all share one problem: Bluetooth signals attenuate fast. The CBU-ASD-LR is Casambi’s answer to this. Built on Bluetooth 5.0 with a transmit power of +8 dBm, it delivers roughly 2.5x the absolute output power of standard CBU modules. It supports 0-10V, 1-10V, and Standalone DALI driver interfaces, runs on 220-240 VAC, and includes an SSR relay output for mains switching.

CBU-ASD-LR is part of the CBU (Casambi Bluetooth Unit) product line, designed for inside-luminaire mounting. It connects wirelessly into a Casambi mesh network of up to 250 nodes, with each node acting as both a controller and a repeater. Firmware updates are delivered over-the-air without opening the luminaire.
The defining characteristic of the LR variant is its radio: Bluetooth 5.0 at +8 dBm, compared to the +4 dBm found in modules like the CBU-A2D. This translates to meaningfully better penetration through RF-attenuating materials and larger node-to-node distances in sparse installations.
Transmit power directly affects how well a BLE signal punches through obstacles. At +8 dBm, the CBU-ASD-LR outputs roughly 2.5 times the absolute power of a +4 dBm module. This matters in real installations when:
The luminaire housing is heavy-gauge steel or aluminum with the module fully enclosed.
Downlights are recessed deep into concrete or gypsum ceiling cavities with acoustic insulation above.
Node spacing is wide and the network cannot rely on mesh density alone to bridge gaps.
Industrial facilities have large metal structures, racking, or machinery between luminaires.
Like all Casambi modules, each CBU-ASD-LR also acts as a mesh repeater within the BLE Mesh network. In dense installations where mesh coverage is already adequate, the LR advantage is less critical. The LR is most valuable when nodes are spaced far apart or when housing attenuation is severe.
CBU-ASD-LR is configured to one of two output modes during commissioning in the Casambi app. The mode cannot be changed without re-commissioning.
Analog mode (0-10V / 1-10V):
Sinking and sourcing output, wired directly to the dim input of a standard 0-10V or 1-10V LED driver.
Maximum one driver per output.
Compatible with the majority of commercial LED drivers on the market.
Standalone DALI mode (Digital):
Output 9-12 VDC, self-powered DALI bus, no external DALI PSU required.
Supports multi-channel CCT, RGB, and RGBW systems through a single module.
Critical note: The DALI implementation on CBU-ASD-LR does not comply with IEC 62386. It is designed for closed systems only and must not be connected to an existing DALI network or any DALI bus with external connections.
CBU-ASD-LR includes a Solid State Relay (SSR) output on the phase line (220-240 VAC). This is structurally different from the 12 VDC relay output on CBU-A2D.
The SSR output is intended to switch an external relay, which can then cut mains power to a driver that does not dim to zero. Never connect the SSR output directly to the mains input of an LED driver. The datasheet explicitly states this connection creates a fire risk. The output is rated for external relay switching only.
Common use case: drivers that hold a residual standby draw even at 0V dim signal. Adding a relay cut-off brings idle power to zero.
CBU-ASD-LR supports several physical control methods that operate without a smartphone or app:
Flick Dimming (wall switch): Turn on the luminaire, flick the switch off and on quickly to start ramping, flick again to lock the desired level. The level saves automatically. If no second flick within 8 seconds, the light ramps to full and holds.
No-voltage push button: Configurable for a momentary push button with no live voltage, suitable for designer switch plates and custom control panels.
PIR sensor (smart-switching): Connects a standard passive infrared sensor through the smart-switching interface for occupancy-based control. Useful in corridors, restrooms, and any area requiring automatic off when unoccupied.
All firmware updates are delivered over-the-air via the Casambi app. No physical access to the luminaire is required after installation.
CBU-ASD-LR mounts inside the luminaire and connects to mains and the LED driver. Disconnect power and verify zero voltage before touching any terminal.
Key points specific to the LR variant:
Input 220-240 VAC, 50 Hz only: No 100-120V support. Confirm mains voltage before specifying for export projects or non-standard supply areas.
Max mains current 0.6 A: Verify cable rating and circuit breaker capacity at the lighting panel.
Thermal derating: Ambient temperature ta max is +50°C, but output current must be derated linearly above +40°C. Luminaires in high-temperature locations need adequate ventilation.
SSR relay output: External relay only. Never connect to driver mains input.
BLE antenna: Higher transmit power improves range but does not eliminate shielding. Position the module to avoid complete enclosure by metal plates. Test connectivity with the Casambi app before closing the luminaire.
Wire specification: 0.5-1.5 mm² (14-22 AWG), strip length 6-7 mm, tightening torque 0.4 Nm.
CBU-ASD-LR is the right module when a project requires Casambi integration into luminaires with 0-10V or DALI drivers and BLE range is a limiting factor: metal housings, recessed deep-ceiling installations, or industrial environments with high RF attenuation. Bluetooth 5.0 at +8 dBm, SSR relay output, PIR and push button support, and OTA firmware updates make it a practical choice for demanding installations.
